Fire suppression systems are used to extinguish, control, or in some cases, entirely prevent fires from spreading or occurring. Fire suppression systems have an incredibly large variety of applications, and as such, there are many different types of suppression systems for different applications being used today. Of these, there are some that are still in use but are no longer legal to manufacture and produce.[1]
Suppression systems[edit]Fire suppression systems are governed by the codes under the National Fire Protection Association, also known as the NFPA. This organization writes codes, regulations, and recommendations on the proper installation and maintenance of these fire suppression systems. Likewise, the NFPA also lists criteria that must be met for the requirements of certain types of fire suppression systems.[2]

Polymer Tube Fire Detection and Suppression Systems (often known as Polymer Tube-based Fire Suppression Systems) are specialized fire protection systems that combine fire detection and suppression into a single, efficient solution. These systems are primarily used in environments where fast response is critical, such as in industrial settings, vehicles, electrical equipment, and other areas with high-risk fire hazards.
Key Components:Polymer Tube (also known as detection tube):
The polymer tube is a heat-sensitive tube filled with a special chemical suppressant, typically a type of fire-suppressant foam or powder. These tubes are designed to react to heat in the event of a fire, detecting the presence of a fire and triggering the suppression agent.
Detection Mechanism:
The polymer tube is a heat-sensitive conduit. When a fire occurs and the temperature around the tube reaches a certain threshold (usually a specific degree Celsius), the polymer tube heats up and ruptures.
This rupture releases the fire suppressant agent inside the tube directly onto the fire source, providing an immediate response.
Some polymer tubes may incorporate detection wires that sense the temperature and trigger an alarm or system activation before the tube ruptures.
Fire Suppression Agent:
The polymer tube contains a chemical suppressant (such as FM-200, Novec 1230, or CO2) that is released when the tube ruptures. These suppressants work by reducing oxygen levels or chemically inhibiting the combustion process to stop the fire.
Control Panel:
The control panel is responsible for monitoring the system and activating additional responses, such as alarms or ventilation systems, once a fire is detected by the polymer tube.
Immediate Response:
The polymer tube provides instant detection and suppression without any delay. The fire is detected as soon as the temperature rises, and suppression begins as the tube ruptures.
Suitable for Hazardous Areas:
These systems are particularly useful in locations where traditional fire detection and suppression systems may not be ideal, such as narrow spaces, enclosed areas, or places where electrical components may be present. They also minimize the risk of water or foam damage to sensitive equipment.
No Power Dependency:
Many polymer tube-based systems are entirely mechanical and don’t rely on external power sources to function.
Local Suppression:
Polymer tube systems allow for localized suppression, meaning the suppression agent is released directly at the fire source, preventing the fire from spreading.
Industrial Equipment: Protects machines, motors, and control panels from fire risks.
Electrical Rooms: Safeguards electrical panels and circuits that may pose a fire hazard.
Vehicles: Often used in trucks, buses, and trains to protect the engine and electrical components.
Server Rooms: Ideal for protecting sensitive electronics and computer systems from fire damage.
Hazardous Locations: Perfect for areas with combustible materials or flammable liquids, where traditional sprinkler systems are not effective

Clean agent fire suppression systems are safe to use in occupied spaces, require no clean up after discharge, and are environmentally friendly with a short to no atmospheric lifetime and a low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Systems are designed around providing total flood protection for small enclosed areas or entire rooms containing sensitive documents or equipment.
Types of clean agent fire suppression systemsThe most common types of clean agent systems use chemical agents like FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) and 3M™ Novec™ 1230 or inert gases, which are made up of gases like nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. All clean agents are stored as either a gas or liquid, and when the system activates, it releases the clean agent as a gas to suppress the fire. Upon discharge, the clean agent removes or disrupts one of three elements needed to sustain a fire – heat, oxygen, or the fuel source. Most clean agent fire suppression systems reach extinguishing concentration levels in just 10 seconds or less, making them highly efficient in suppressing a fire before significant damage can be done. Because clean agents quickly evaporate, there is minimal downtime as no clean-up is required.

novec 1230 (ul listed) engineered system with 3m (tm) novec (tm) 1230. The 4th generation of clean agent low pressure chemical fire suppression systems.
for use in markets which accept the usa dot/ peso cylinders.
the novec 1230 ul listed system is engineered to optimise the unique flow characteristics of novec 1230. Due to lower volatility, novec can be safely charged to 35 bar. The increased pressure, combined with the liquid flow characteristics of novec in the discharge piping, has enabled significant improvements in design flexibility over traditional 25 bar systems.
the novec 1230 clean agent chemical system features:
low pressure system
larger than average distribution networks due to greater pipe volume to liquid agent volume
increased distance from cylinder to nozzle
increased vertical differential from cylinder to nozzle.
firetrace is a simple and effective “micro-environment suppression system”.
designed for simple installation, often very near the source of a potential fire, firetrace is a self-activating suppression system that reliably suppresses fires in seconds.
direct release systems
the direct release system utilizes the firetrace detection tubing as both the fire detection device and the fire suppressant delivery system. The portion of the tube nearest the hottest point of the fire ruptures and forms an effective discharge “nozzle”. The pressure drop in the tube releases the entire contents of the cylinder through this nozzle.
indirect release systemswith the indirect release system, the firetrace detection tubing is used only as a detection device. The fire suppression agent is delivered via copper tubing, stainless steel tubing or braided hose. Once the tube “bursts”, the suppressant is discharged through strategically placed nozzles within the protected enclosure.
