Fire suppression systems are used to extinguish, control, or in some cases, entirely prevent fires from spreading or occurring. Fire suppression systems have an incredibly large variety of applications, and as such, there are many different types of suppression systems for different applications being used today. Of these, there are some that are still in use but are no longer legal to manufacture and produce.[1]
Suppression systems[edit]Fire suppression systems are governed by the codes under the National Fire Protection Association, also known as the NFPA. This organization writes codes, regulations, and recommendations on the proper installation and maintenance of these fire suppression systems. Likewise, the NFPA also lists criteria that must be met for the requirements of certain types of fire suppression systems.[2]

In this system, there is an extinguisher with the extinguishing agent with an actuating valve and a length of a specially designed heat detection tube which acts as the fire detection line and the feeder for the agent.
The system is activated when the temperature of the area of installation reaches a level of the temperature around the pipe which bursts the pipe with a small pressurised hole in the pipe, which allows the agent to direct the spray the agent on fire. This suppression system is ideal for Small machinery, electrical switch cabinets and fume cupboards. A very simple, cost-effective and easy to install solution, this is entry-level equipment for fire suppression.
A small amount of agent required as it’s assumed it will attack the fire at the smouldering stage or at the beginning of a fire. No moving or electrical parts (low install cost and low maintenance cost.) No room integrity required. Can install in small intricate areas such as machinery. Can use many gases like HDC 227 ea, Co2, IG55. Cost-effective all-around – a small amount of agent required, no pipework, special design. Mobile – can take out and install elsewhere.

Not all fire suppression systems use gas to put out fires, but many do. Unlike water, powder, or foam fire suppression systems, gas suppression systems can put out fires without damaging equipment. Some gaseous fire suppression systems do not require any clean up at all after they put out a fire.
There are several different kinds of gases that can be used to suppress a fire. Some of the most common gases used in fire suppression systems are:
We will discuss the properties, advantages, and disadvantages of each type of gaseous fire suppression system.
Chemical Clean Agent Fire Suppression SystemsBoth HFC-227ea and FK-5-1-12 are types of chemicals used in clean agent fire suppression systems. Clean agents are commonly used to suppress fires in machinery and electrical equipment, because they do not damage components. Clean agents can also be used to protect occupied spaces, such as electrical rooms, because they are safe for people.
Clean agents are also safe for the environment; they do not cause ozone depletion and they have minimal global warming potential compared to alternatives.
HFC-227eaHFC-227ea is one type of clean agent. The original manufacturer of HFC-227ea is ChemoursTM, who sell the chemical under the brand name FM-200TM. This clean agent functions by removing heat, which puts out a fire. HFC-227ea can also disrupt free radicals, which can help extinguish a fire by interfering with key chemical reactions.
HFC-227ea is a heptaflouropropane, which is a type of heptaflourocarbon (HFC). Although there are some environmental concerns with HFC’s, fire suppression systems are largely exempt from legislation that bans the use of HFC’s. That’s because fire suppression systems only contain a small amount of HFC’s and do not discharge them into the atmosphere frequently enough to cause significant environmental harm.
FK-5-1-12FK-5-1-12 is another type of clean agent. The original manufactuer of FK-5-1-12 is 3MTM, who sell the chemical under the brand name NovecTM 1230. Until 2020, 3MTM had patent on FK-5-1-12, but the patent expires on July 31, 2020. Like HFC-227ea, FK-5-1-12 suppresses fires by removing heat.
Unlike HFC-227ea, FK-5-1-12 is a fluorinated ketone. Because FK-5-1-12 is not an HFC, it is generally considered more environmentally friendly. When it comes to environmental impact, the key difference between the two chemicals is their global warming potential (GWP). NovecTM 1230 has a lower global warming potential than FM200.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Suppression SystemsCarbon dioxide is another commonly used gas in fire suppression systems. Like clean agents, carbon dioxide does not require clean up after discharge. Unlike clean agents, carbon dioxide puts out fires by removing oxygen, not heat. This is a critical difference, because it means that carbon dioxide can not be used in occupied spaces. Because carbon dioxide removes oxygen, it can suffocate people. If you are using a carbon dioxide system for fire suppression, make sure to completely ventilate the area if the system goes off. Only then is it safe for personnel to assess the damage.
We advise against using carbon dioxide for protection of electronic equipment due to the risk of thermal shock. Thermal shock occurs because carbon dioxide can be stored at extremely cold temperatures. When the carbon dioxide discharges, it can freeze electronic components, causing irreversible damage. Clean agents are a better choice for protection of electrical cabinets and other similar equipment.

A FM-200 tube-based fire suppression system is a compact, automatic clean agent fire suppression system that uses FM-200 (Heptafluoropropane) as the extinguishing agent and a heat-sensitive detection tube to detect and suppress fires at their source — typically in enclosed spaces like electrical panels, control cabinets, server racks, and machinery compartments.
How a Tube-Based FM-200 System Works 1. DetectionA special polymer detection tube is installed inside the enclosure.
The tube is pressurized with nitrogen and routed close to high-risk components.
It senses heat directly — no electrical power or sensors needed.
When a fire starts, the temperature rises quickly.
The tube softens and bursts at the hottest point (usually 100°C to 180°C).
This drop in pressure triggers the FM-200 cylinder to release the agent.
FM-200 is discharged either:
Directly from the burst hole in the tube (Direct System), or
Through dedicated discharge nozzles (Indirect System).
The agent floods the enclosure, quickly extinguishing the fire in seconds.
