Novec 1230 fluid is known as a fluorinated ketone and is manufactured by 3M. Novec 1230 fluid has low toxicity and has a boiling point of 49 degrees C and therefore exists as a liquid at room temperature.

3M Novec 1230 fluid is waterless and discharged as a gas. The agent has highest margin of occupant safety of any NFPA 2001 clean agent and evaporates quickly, leaving no residue. - The FireCut system uses HFC-227ea or HFC-236fa, which is an extremely effective, clean and people-safe extinguishing medium.
- Fire Cut system operates automatically independent of any power supply by detecting higher temperatures. When the temperature in the protected enclosure rises to a critical threshold, the detection tube melts down at the point where the affecting temperature is the highest. Melting the tube creates a hole releasing the entire extinguishing agent stored in the tube onto the source of the fire.

There are a few different types of agents that are used in a suppression system to suppress the fire. In server rooms and environments where you have personnel working in the area, you will usually find clean agent or inert gas suppression systems. In environments where there are few personnel or none at all, you will typically find CO2 fire suppression systems. The areas that you’ll find CO2 fire suppression systems include engine rooms, generator rooms, power stations, flammable liquid storage rooms, and around large industrial machines.
While CO2 fire suppression systems are highly effective at suppressing fires, the CO2 agent also poses a health risk when compared to the other agents. For this reason, you’ll find CO2 fire suppression systems most often in non-occupied environments.
A fire needs oxygen, fuel, and heat to continue to burn. By eliminating one of these three elements, a fire can be suppressed or extinguished. While some suppression agents reduce the heat of the fire, a CO2 fire suppression system eliminates the oxygen to suppress the fire. When the suppression system detects smoke or fire, it then releases the CO2 agent into the space it is protecting. The CO2 level in the space quickly increases as the oxygen level quickly drops causing the fire to be suppressed or extinguished.
CO2 is a colorless, odorless, and electrically non-conductive gas that leaves no residue behind. This means any sensitive equipment that is in the protected space is not damaged by the CO2, which reduces downtime and costs. Once the CO2 has dispersed to safe levels from the protected space, personnel can access any damage from the fire or smoke and quickly get back to work with no cleanup needed.

In this system, there is an extinguisher with the extinguishing agent with an actuating valve and a length of a specially designed heat detection tube which acts as the fire detection line and the feeder for the agent.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a clean agent is an electrically non-conducting, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishant that does not leave a residue upon evaporation. A clean agent fire suppression system uses either a chemical or inert gas to suppress a fire at the inception stage before it can grow and is incredibly effective in extinguishing Class A, B, and C fires.
Clean agent fire suppression systems are safe to use in occupied spaces, require no clean up after discharge, and are environmentally friendly with a short to no atmospheric lifetime and a low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Systems are designed around providing total flood protection for small enclosed areas or entire rooms containing sensitive documents or equipment.
Types of clean agent fire suppression systemsThe most common types of clean agent systems use chemical agents like FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) and 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid or inert gases, which are made up of gases like nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. All clean agents are stored as either a gas or liquid, and when the system activates, it releases the clean agent as a gas to suppress the fire. Upon discharge, the clean agent removes or disrupts one of three elements needed to sustain a fire – heat, oxygen, or the fuel source. Most clean agent fire suppression systems reach extinguishing concentration levels in just 10 seconds or less, making them highly efficient in suppressing a fire before significant damage can be done. Because clean agents quickly evaporate, there is minimal downtime as no clean-up is required.
When it comes to clean agent fire suppression system costs, 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM will be more cost-effective over other gaseous systems because less agent is needed to suppress the fire, requiring smaller storage cylinders. In comparing 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is slightly more expensive of the two chemical agents.
Of the three clean agents, inert gas is the most environmentally friendly with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (OPD) and zero GWP. While both 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM have a zero ODP, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is considered to be more environmentally friendly because of its lower GWP of 1.
