Electrical arcing and other malfunctions can easily start a fire inside of electrical equipment. Fires can start anywhere there is an electrical connection, and it's important to detect them right at their source. Firetrace systems detect fires using flexible tubing that can be installed anywhere a fire can start. If electrical equipment catches fire, the tubing bursts open, dousing the fire with clean agent gas. Unlike water or carbon dioxide, clean agents will not damage sensitive electronics, making them ideal for electrical equipment.
Traditional fire detectors provide only a single point of detection. If a fire starts far away from the detector, then it may grow very large before triggering the detector. Firetrace systems detect fires with flexible tubing that can be placed throughout the equipment, providing instant detection at the source of a fire.
Most fire suppression systems contain metal components. The problem with metal components is that they can cause electrical arcing. Since electrical arcing is the #1 cause of electrical fires, suppression systems with metal nozzles can actually increase fire risk. Firetrace DLP systems can deliver suppression gas straight through the detection tubing, eliminating the need for metal nozzles.
Firetrace systems use clean agent gas to suppress fires inside electrical equipment. Unlike water, carbon dioxide, and other chemicals, clean agents are safe for electronics. Clean agents also leave no residue, so they do not require clean up. Finally, clean agents are safe for people, which means you can use them to protect equipment and rooms where people are working.
Can you trust your fire suppression system to work when you need it? Fortunately, several testing organizations independently evaluate fire suppression systems from different manufacturers. The evaluations include live fire tests and semi-annual audits of manufacturing processes. Firetrace clean agent DLP systems hold a third party certification from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB).
Engineered vs. pre-engineered fire suppression systems also need discussion. Engineered fire suppression systems will protect an entire room. Firetrace, for example, uses clean agents that are safe with electronics and can be inhaled without doing any harm to a person.
Pre-engineered systems are used to protect small compartments or micro-environments. Engine compartments and electrical panels are good examples of where these types of systems would provide protection. They are also useful for suppressing fires in CNC and EDM machines.

Fire suppression agents: Within pre-engineered fire suppression systems, there is a slew of agents that can be used. Class K systems typically have foam fire suppressants or other wet chemical agent options to help reduce the spread of the fire within the space. Engines, by contrast, are typically protected using ABC Dry Chemical powder, which can effectively suppress Class A, B, and C fires.
Common applications: Direct release systems are recommended for electrical panel and server rack protection.

Novec 1230 fluid is a clear, colorless and low odor liquid perfectly suited to protect high value assets in areas that may be normally occupied, in locations where clean-up of other agents is problematic, when storage space for a fire suppression agent is restricted, or when an electrically non-conductive agent is required. Each system consists of the following components and their associated accessories:
- Agent Storage Components – Storage components consist of the cylinder assembly(s), which contains the Novec 1230 fluid, and the cylinder bracket(s), which holds the cylinder assembly securely in place.
- Agent Fluid Distribution Components – Distribution components consist of the discharge nozzles used to introduce the Novec 1230 fluid into a protected hazard along with the associated piping system used to connect the nozzles to the cylinder assembly.
- Trim Components – Trim components complete the installation of the suppression system and consist of connection fittings, pressure gauge, low-pressure supervisory switch, electric valve actuator, and manual valve actuator.
- Slave Arrangement Components – Slave arrangement components consist of the pneumatic valve actuator(s), actuation check valve, vent check, actuation hose, and fittings required for a multiple cylinder (slave) arrangement.
- Supplemental Components – Supplemental components include the discharge pressure switch and manifold check valve. They supplement the core equipment or complete a specific multicylinder configuration.
- Control Panel – This device monitors the condition of the electric actuator, detectors, warning devices, cylinder pressure, and any manual release and abort stations. All electric or electronic devices must connect to the control panel in order to function.
- Detection and Alarm Devices – Detection devices coupled with manual release and abort stations maximize system efficiency while audible and visual alarm devices alert staff of alarm conditions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a clean agent is an electrically non-conducting, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishant that does not leave a residue upon evaporation. A clean agent fire suppression system uses either a chemical or inert gas to suppress a fire at the inception stage before it can grow and is incredibly effective in extinguishing Class A, B, and C fires.
Clean agent fire suppression systems are safe to use in occupied spaces, require no clean up after discharge, and are environmentally friendly with a short to no atmospheric lifetime and a low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Systems are designed around providing total flood protection for small enclosed areas or entire rooms containing sensitive documents or equipment.
Types of clean agent fire suppression systemsThe most common types of clean agent systems use chemical agents like FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) and 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid or inert gases, which are made up of gases like nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. All clean agents are stored as either a gas or liquid, and when the system activates, it releases the clean agent as a gas to suppress the fire. Upon discharge, the clean agent removes or disrupts one of three elements needed to sustain a fire – heat, oxygen, or the fuel source. Most clean agent fire suppression systems reach extinguishing concentration levels in just 10 seconds or less, making them highly efficient in suppressing a fire before significant damage can be done. Because clean agents quickly evaporate, there is minimal downtime as no clean-up is required.
When it comes to clean agent fire suppression system costs, 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM will be more cost-effective over other gaseous systems because less agent is needed to suppress the fire, requiring smaller storage cylinders. In comparing 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is slightly more expensive of the two chemical agents.
Of the three clean agents, inert gas is the most environmentally friendly with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (OPD) and zero GWP. While both 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM have a zero ODP, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is considered to be more environmentally friendly because of its lower GWP of 1.
