- Bus fire suppression systems work by detecting and suppressing the fire before it spreads. Pre-engineered systems with non-electric detection do not rely on electricity and provide 24/7 protection. The system routes linear pneumatic detection tubing throughout the engine compartment to detect the fire.
- Should a fire start in the engine compartment, the increase in temperature or direct contact with flame will cause the tubing to burst, releasing pressure on the cylinder.
Discharging suppression agent:
- The change in pressure signals the system to discharge the agent through strategically placed diffuser nozzles, flooding the engine compartment quickly to suppress the fire. An optional system indicator is available and alerts the driver the system has activated or requires servicing.
Suppressing the fire:
- The recommendation for engine fire suppression systems is the use of ABC Dry chemical because of its effectiveness in suppressing Class A, B, and C fires. These fires hazards may originate from fuel leakage, faulty electrical connections, short circuits, or hydraulic hoses. From a system standpoint, there is no difference in suppressing a diesel, gasoline, LNG, or CNG fire.
- Are automatic fire suppression systems required for buses?
- While the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) does recommend that all new and in-service school buses be equipped with automatic fire suppression systems, there is not a current regulation that requires it within the INDIA. The most common types of clean agent systems use chemical agents like FM-200™ (HFC-227ea) and 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid or inert gases, which are made up of gases like nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. All clean agents are stored as either a gas or liquid, and when the system activates, it releases the clean agent as a gas to suppress the fire. Upon discharge, the clean agent removes or disrupts one of three elements needed to sustain a fire – heat, oxygen, or the fuel source. Most clean agent fire suppression systems reach extinguishing concentration levels in just 10 seconds or less, making them highly efficient in suppressing a fire before significant damage can be done. Because clean agents quickly evaporate, there is minimal downtime as no clean-up is required.
When it comes to clean agent fire suppression system costs, 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM will be more cost-effective over other gaseous systems because less agent is needed to suppress the fire, requiring smaller storage cylinders. In comparing 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is slightly more expensive of the two chemical agents.
Of the three clean agents, inert gas is the most environmentally friendly with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (OPD) and zero GWP. While both 3M Novec 1230 fluid and FM-200TM have a zero ODP, 3M Novec 1230 fluid is considered to be more environmentally friendly because of its lower GWP of 1.
Clean agent fire suppression systems protect valuable assets and equipment when traditional fire sprinkler systems using water or foam would create as much, if not more, damage than the fire. Some typical applications and areas protected by clean agent systems include:
- CNC and EDM machines
- Electrical cabinets and panels
- Components within the nacelle of a wind turbine
- Data storage and telecommunications systems
- Record/file repositories and libraries
- Museums, artwork, and other culturally significant assets
When it comes to evaluating which clean agent system to implement, several factors should be considered. You must take into account the area or type of equipment you are protecting, amount of space required for the clean agent cylinders, and where cylinders will be located relative to the area or asset being protected. As previously mentioned, inert gases are less effective and require more agent when compared to the chemical agents and therefore need larger or more cylinders to protect the same space. Inert gas systems can be located farther away from the protected space because of the pressure of each cylinder and easier flow of the inert gas through the discharge piping. FM-200TM and 3M Novec 1230 fluid systems need to be located in closer proximity to the protected area as the compressed liquids don’t flow as well as inert gases, requiring less distance between the cylinder and discharge piping.

Fire suppression systems are designed to suppress or extinguish a fire in sensitive environments where water from a fire sprinkler is not a desired extinguishing agent. Common areas where you will find fire suppression systems include server rooms, engine rooms, flammable storage areas, museums, and data centers.
There are a few different types of agents that are used in a suppression system to suppress the fire. In server rooms and environments where you have personnel working in the area, you will usually find clean agent or inert gas suppression systems. In environments where there are few personnel or none at all, you will typically find CO2 fire suppression systems. The areas that you’ll find CO2 fire suppression systems include engine rooms, generator rooms, power stations, flammable liquid storage rooms, and around large industrial machines.
While CO2 fire suppression systems are highly effective at suppressing fires, the CO2 agent also poses a health risk when compared to the other agents. For this reason, you’ll find CO2 fire suppression systems most often in non-occupied environments.
A fire needs oxygen, fuel, and heat to continue to burn. By eliminating one of these three elements, a fire can be suppressed or extinguished. While some suppression agents reduce the heat of the fire, a CO2 fire suppression system eliminates the oxygen to suppress the fire. When the suppression system detects smoke or fire, it then releases the CO2 agent into the space it is protecting. The CO2 level in the space quickly increases as the oxygen level quickly drops causing the fire to be suppressed or extinguished.
CO2 is a colorless, odorless, and electrically non-conductive gas that leaves no residue behind. This means any sensitive equipment that is in the protected space is not damaged by the CO2, which reduces downtime and costs. Once the CO2 has dispersed to safe levels from the protected space, personnel can access any damage from the fire or smoke and quickly get back to work with no cleanup needed.
Is a CO2 Fire Suppression System Dangerous?
At 7.5% concentration, CO2 can cause asphyxiation to humans. Most CO2 fire suppression systems are designed to have 34% CO2 concentrations for a total flood of the protected space. Due to the obvious dangers of CO2, the CO2 fire suppression systems are required to have certain life safety devices to protect personnel around or near the protected spaces. One of the life safety devices is a pneumatic siren that warns people around the area that the CO2 will be discharging from the suppression system. It is important to properly train all personnel on the dangers of the CO2 fire suppression system and how to evacuate safely if the system is preparing to dump the CO2 to suppress the fire.
